California Governor Gavin Newsom took a sharp jab at President Donald Trump on Monday, pointing to record-high fuel prices as the war in Iran continues to rattle oil markets. The uncertainty over shipments through the Strait of Hormuz isn't helping either.
In a post on X, Newsom quoted a post that referenced Energy Secretary Chris Wright's Sunday interview with ABC, where Wright said prices would come down and demand would cool as summer driving winds down. Newsom wasn't buying it.
"Gas rationing has arrived in Trump's America. Great work, Chairman Donald!" Newsom wrote.
The governor's press office also chimed in, quoting a post from Ivanka Trump that showed her riding a horse on a beach. The response was a simple "Ok," accompanied by a screenshot of a headline about record-high gas prices over the Labor Day weekend.
Meanwhile, former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene added her own criticism, noting that diesel prices in California are approaching $8 a gallon. The escalating U.S.-Iran tensions have sent fuel costs soaring at pumps across the country.
Risk analyst Brett Erickson weighed in, suggesting Trump's grip on the oil market is slipping. "Trump has no real power to jawbone the markets anymore," Erickson said, adding that Iran "clearly intends to sink" him in the November midterm elections.
The back-and-forth comes as Americans grapple with some of the highest fuel prices in years, a politically charged issue that's likely to dominate headlines as the election season heats up.
